Since WhatsApp Plus is not available in any official app stores, such as the Google Play Store, it needs to be downloaded from third-party sources. This lack of verification on official platforms creates legal and security concerns. Tech analyst Paul Thurrott comments, "unverified third-party apps can expose users to a range of risks from data privacy issues to malware," since they are not forced to go through security checks imposed by official app stores.
Moreover, WhatsApp Plus does not use end-to-end encryption like official WhatsApp. This alone makes messages sent over WhatsApp Plus less secure and easily intercepted by third-party entities. The lack of security further brings into question the legality of the app, as it circumvents the protections set forth by Meta in accordance with data privacy laws in many countries. Indeed, some regions even have regulations concerning making messaging secure, to which WhatsApp Plus does not stand.
Using WhatsApp Plus can also involve copyright infringement. Since it is a mod version, it reproduces all the core functionalities and brand that are on WhatsApp without asking for permission from Meta. This, therefore, also represents an intellectual property infringement. In some jurisdictions, it is considered a copyright violation to distribute or make use of proprietary software versions, hence developers and users can expect some legal consequences for doing so.
Users will not often be taken to court for using WhatsApp Plus, but there are many risks involved in account suspensions, data privacy concerns, and potential copyright infringement, which make
